Civitaretenga is a charming medieval village located on the Navelli plateau in the province of L'Aquila. With its origins dating back to the ninth century, the village was built around watchtowers to defend against barbarian incursions. Its urban structure reflects this past, maintaining intact its defensive character with an ovoid-shaped castle. Throughout history, Civitaretenga has seen the passage of various dominations, from the Benedictines to the Angevins, each of which has left an indelible mark on the local culture and architecture.
A peculiar aspect of Civitaretenga is the Jewish presence since the 12th century, located in the neighbourhood of the parish of San Salvatore. Jews played a crucial role in the local economy thanks to the flourishing art of marking and concessions received from the royal family of Naples. The original synagogue was integrated into the Perelli Palace, which still retains traces of its historical memory. This community significantly influenced the development of trade and the cultivation of saffron, one of the region's most valuable resources.
For centuries, Civitaretenga has participated in the growth of the surrounding area, as evidenced by its participation in the foundation of L'Aquila in 1254. Unfortunately, the village has faced numerous earthquakes that have severely damaged its historical structures, including the ancient castle. However, despite the damage suffered, it continues to retain its historical charm. The recent 2009 earthquake aggravated depopulation, but thanks to restoration efforts, the village is now showing signs of recovery, enhanced by the reconstruction of the tower and mother church.
Civitaretenga, located 875 metres above sea level, not only offers a journey through history, but also a breathtaking view of the valley and surrounding mountains. The village, famous for its production of PDO saffron, is a symbol of resilience and authenticity. Conservation and reconstruction efforts are rekindling tourist and cultural interest in this beautiful location, which continues to tell stories of a rich and multifaceted past through its streets and architecture.
