Castel del Monte is located in the Abruzzo hinterland, within the Gran Sasso massif, at an altitude of over 1346 metres. This charming village offers a panoramic view of the Tirino valley and is located along the southern slopes of Mount Bolza. The village, with around 379 inhabitants, falls within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park and is one of the gems of Italy's most beautiful villages. The local economy has undergone a transformation in recent years, moving from traditional sheep farming to tourism, thanks to the authenticity of its historical centre and the beauty of the surrounding natural landscape.
The archaeological discovery near the Piana di San Marco is of great importance. Here, excavations have revealed a vast Italic necropolis, offering a glimpse into ancient life and practices in the region. Next to the necropolis, the remains of a medieval settlement were found, bearing witness to the historical evolution of Castel del Monte. These archaeological finds represent an invaluable cultural heritage, helping to build the historical identity of the village and attracting scholars and tourists from all over the world.
Transhumance, a thousand-year-old tradition of Castel del Monte, was also celebrated with a stamp dedicated by the Italian Postal Service in 2004. This practice, involving the seasonal transfer of cattle between mountain pastures and plains, has profoundly influenced the local economy and culture. Although sheep-farming is no longer the main economic driver, the tradition lives on in the tales of the inhabitants and in the cultural events that take place in the village, keeping alive a deep connection with the past.
Today, Castel del Monte is a renowned tourist destination, part of the circuit of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Its location in the heart of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park offers visitors a unique experience, characterised by breathtaking landscapes and a rich cultural offer. Local handicrafts, with the production of carpets, tapestries and rustic furniture, add value to the tourist economy. Moreover, the proximity to the villages of Calascio, Castelvecchio Calvisio and Santo Stefano di Sessanio further enhances the attractiveness of the entire area.
